While the Leaning Tower remains Pisa’s most recognized landmark, the city offers much more than a single architectural curiosity in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Its appeal extends well beyond the boundaries of the walled complex.
The historic center is a network of narrow medieval streets, lined with artisan workshops, small trattorias, and quiet squares. Among these, Piazza dei Cavalieri notable for its Renaissance architecture and the Scuola Normale Superiore. Pisa contains a variety of artistic institutions, including the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, known for its medieval and Renaissance collections, and Palazzo Blu, which hosts contemporary exhibitions.
The city also serves as a convenient starting point for exploring the Tuscan countryside. Twenty kilometers away, Lucca offers intact Renaissance walls and a well-preserved historic center. Along the coast to the north, Viareggio (15 miles) combines beach culture with early 20th-century architecture. Further inland, the Chianti region (about 60 miles) presents vineyard-covered hills, local wineries, and small villages ideal for a scenic drive. San Gimignano (about 50 miles) is notable for its medieval towers and preserved streets. Florence (52 miles), the largest nearby city, offers extensive Renaissance art and architecture, though it often sees heavy tourist traffic.
Pisa Airport
Pisa International Airport (PSA), also known as Galileo Galilei Airport, is located just one mile from central Pisa.
The car rental center is situated approximately 0.3 miles from the main passenger terminal. It is easily accessible on foot, taking about five minutes to reach. Major car rental companies, including Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and Sixt, operate from this location. If you need to complete the check-in process, you can do so at the desk or self-service kiosk, then simply head to the nearby parking area to pick up your vehicle.
Drop-offs: Car returns are made at the same car rental center, conveniently located close to the terminal.
Payment: A credit card is typically required for both payment and the security deposit. Some companies may also accept debit cards under certain conditions.
Vehicle options: To explore Pisa and its scenic surroundings, the Peugeot 2008 and Mazda 3 are ideal choices. The Peugeot 2008, with its compact size and elevated ride, is perfect for navigating narrow city streets while offering comfort for countryside drives. The Mazda3 adds a sporty edge — sleek, agile, and effortlessly smooth on winding Tuscan roads. Both cars combine style, practicality, and driving pleasure, making them a perfect match for city strolls and scenic escapes.
