For families covering more ground around San Francisco, the Ford Explorer offers genuine three-row practicality. Seven seats and a sizeable boot make it well suited to family days out at the city's museums and parks. The Explorer rides smoothly over longer distances, helping to keep rear-seat passengers comfortable.
Exploratorium
The Exploratorium at Pier 15 is a hands-on science museum with more than 650 interactive exhibits exploring science, art and human perception. The Tactile Dome, a pitch-dark crawl-through space navigated entirely by touch, requires a separate ticket and advance booking. The Explorer's third row gives the whole family room to travel together to the Embarcadero.
California Academy of Sciences
The California Academy of Sciences combines a natural history museum, aquarium and planetarium under one living roof in Golden Gate Park. A four-storey rainforest dome and a large coral reef tank sit alongside nearly 46 million scientific specimens in its research collections. The Explorer's boot holds pushchairs and bags for a full day out with younger children.
Bay Model Visitor Center
The Bay Model Visitor Center in Sausalito houses a working hydraulic scale model of San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. Built by the US Army Corps of Engineers, the free exhibit was used as a working laboratory from 1957 until 2000 to study tides and currents.
Skyline Boulevard follows the Peninsula ridge south from Highway 92, passing areas of redwood woodland and open grassland. Some sections offer views across the surrounding wooded hills and valleys. The Explorer's spacious cabin keeps a full family comfortable on a longer drive along the ridge.
